Assuming it is not possible to distribute the checkers evenly, where the cube is available for use, it is good to have two checkers on the two point because this frequently leads to last roll efficient cubes with distributions 0(2)0000, 011000 and to a lesser extent 010100. Having a man on the 2 point in the last roll bear off gains a bundle in cube efficiency much of the time, and having a couple of checkers there improves the likelihood of reaching such a position significantly. I thought this was a well known concept.
