Without a lot of thought, I'd say that the difference between 9 dan professional and 2 dan professional is about the same as the difference between a top 10 Giant and an average intermediate player in backgammon.
That sounds weired to me. Taking the population of serious go tournament players, less than 1% of them are professionals. Thus, a professional 2 dan is at least within the top 1% of that population. An intermediate backgammon player is not within the top 1% of serious backgammon players.
Taking years of study as a measure we might come closer. I'd say, very taltented Go players need 10 years of intense study to become 1d. It might take around 20 years for them to become 9d from there. Thus twice as long. How about backgammon? Did someone how reached the Top 10 of the giants list needed twice as long from intermediate to top giant, compared to the time he needed from beginner to intermediate? I'd say he needed longer to become top giant.
