Giants list criteria--list the cheaters please

In Response To: Giants list criteria (ed olaughlin)

1. For the same reason you are not about to list the 3 cheaters on the current Giant's list, no committee is about to remove someone from the list on the basis that they cheat. Without definitive proof, the legal ramifications from calling someone a cheat are horrific, and even with proof you might find yourself in court or a very dark place.

2. It's great to talk about how the criteria for the Giant list should be changed, but unfortunately, it never does, and even though a poll of the entire backgammon community would probably agree on putting in some minimum play criteria as well as other criteria (if you never cashed in all the tournaments you played in the past 4 years, why the hell should you be on the Giants list; if you can't play under 10 PR, and have proof, why should you be on the Giant's list, etc. etc.), public opinion doesn't seem to matter to the people who control the Giant's list.

Yes, yes, for years we have been thanking Carol and Yamin and Jake and John...all great people and good friends of mine, and people who have done a wonderful service to the backgammon community when we didn't have computers and software and the internet to keep track of results. So thanks again, guy, for adding something that used to be very meaningful and exciting to the game. But times have changed and either you must also change or you are wasting your time.

I still maintain it is great to see who is at the top of the list, as clearly those people at or near the top deserve recognition, but they would all have it without the Giants List. Who doesn't know that Mochy, Michy, Akiko, and Falafel are terrific players? I don't need a list for that.

And as you start scrolling down of course the next few players are great, and of course you start noticing names that are missing that should be there, and by the time you get past number 10, while there are some great players there, a lot are missing and many are there that clearly don't belong.

So guys, change or lose any real meaning and unless you change, you are wasting a lot of time and energy on what will be a big waste of time and energy.

This game, like all games, needs heroes, and we need to honor the great ones and make them special for the good of the game and out of respect for their accomplishments. The Giants List used to be the way to do that. Now, it is very suspect without meaningful criteria for eligibility to vote and to be voted for.
