Bearing off against a nearly-busted backgame

There is something to be said for simply bearing off a checker, 5/off, while leaving no blots. That play buys out of 5s, but leaves awkward 4s and 6s. More shots, perhaps several, are likely later. The advantage of bearing off, of course, is to get as many checkers off the board as possible before you are hit.
Moving 6/4 smooths the distribution. Coupled with 3/off, it might be the best play. It addition to smoothing, it rips off just as many checkers as 5/off. Volunteering 20 shots, however, when it is possible to leave none, is hard to justify.
What about stacking everything on the 3pt? 6/3 5/3 leaves a stripped, but smooth distribution. Once again, 6 and 4 become awkward numbers. Is this the worst of the three?
I do not have a strong sense of how to play this. Over the board, I might play 6/4 3/off.
