I think you do want to try to pick up the second checker but there are several ways to try to do that. I don't like keeping a closed board because that wastes too many pips. The three candidates I see are 6/4 5/off, 5/off 2/off, and 6/1 2/off. 6/1 2/off wastes pips but has the advantage that White may enter and not escape. 5/off 2/off maximizes the chances of picking up the second checker but then it may be hard to contain them even if they are picked up because we have only a four-point board. I'll try the compromise play 6/4 5/off.
