A first guess would be two on the ace pt.
But I hope it's not that straight-forward :)

How about one checker on the ace pt and one on the 7pt?

For high doubles it wastes 6 less, but that's not a lot of numbers. On the other hand we waste some more pips if we roll non doubles of more than 6 pips. Let's see: for 7 pips rolls like 5-2 or 6-1, we bear off 1 checker and then waste a whole pip more on all follow ups since we have 1 instead of 2 checkers on the ace. For bigger rolls like 6-4, we waste some pips immediatelly (in this case, 3) and then on the follow up roll, we waste again the same as we would with 2 guys on the ace, +1.
