The box means NOTHING

In Response To: The box means NOTHING (Timothy Chow)

There is no question that the best player in the chouette has a major advantage when he's in the box. But he also has a major advantage when he is not in the box...depending on the rules of the chouette, of course. In our Chicago chouette players can pick and choose who they take and who they pass, and any time it is close, and often when it is not close, the better player will be dropped and receive many points for passing. Even when there is equal action, if it is a consulting chouette, the better player can often make an excellent settlement (as the box does not want that player consulting).

So it depends on the local rules, but it also depends on who you are. There can only be one "best" player in the chouette, and I agree that it is quite possible that there is an advantage for him. Please keep in mind that the article was aimed at your "average" chouette player. If you are the best or the worst in the chouette, of course there are adjustments you should make. (The worst player should adjust his location.)
