Hi Matt,

The checkers in the first octant (pts 1-3) don't need to be counted. The number 30 in the formula adds 2 for each checker to bring it to the middle of its octant.

But that brings up a good point. The method assumes all checkers are on the board -- none on the bar, none borne off.
