In Response To: Example of the denseness of NFL front offices (jdg)

We analyzed the full regular seasons (after the seasons were over) for 2006-2008 seasons (see our website for links to the first two; the other was in the NYTimes on Super Bowl Sunday 2009 -- we need to get our links updated). We haven't decided about doing this for the season just ended.

Regarding Singletary and 4th and short near midfield, if there is one part of the field where NFL coaches have tended to go for it in the past it's that zone where it's too long for a FG but where a punt often goes into the endzone. (This was written about in ESPN Magazine by Michael Lewis two or three years ago.) I'd have to look closer at the specific situations you reference to see if he is doing something different than standard.
