Curious question: What is the difference between backgammon players?

I tend to agree with Sam, though I'd emphasize that a big factor is that beyond a certain point, it's very hard to distinguish between highly skilled backgammon players. In games like go and chess where there's less "noise," I'm not sure obsession is enough to get you to the top (where, for example, in chess I'd define "top" to mean a rating of 2700+).
