Curious question: What is the difference between backgammon players?

My basics answer was for someone like Max who seemed to want to know what it takes to get to 'that' level, not for your random donkey. I think everything I listed (and much more) should be the solid foundation for any serious bg player. The opening phase of the game happens, at least it seems to me, every game. Holding games are very common, races will come up often, and in the realm of all things bg that we can categorize things like prime v. prime or pay now v. pay later happen relatively often. Things that are popping up all the time you should make a huge effort to be overly familiar with.
