Curious question: What is the difference between backgammon players?

I agree.

Practice makes perfect.

You don't need a super high IQ to play backgammon at the highest level (though I believe it probably helps having one).

You need to be able to memorize a few things, pattern recognition, count and calculate a little. Nothing which requires a super high IQ.

Allow me to compare to bridge which I have been playing for 1,5 season now. To me bridge requires a lot more and is much more mentally draining. In bridge you need to remember all sorts of conventions and bidding systems, you need to remember how the bidding went, you need to use logic to deduce all the info possible from the bids, you have to remember how the cards were played, you have to calculate odds when opting for the best plan (while still remembering what info you obtained via the bidding), etc. To me bridge seems to require a lot more thought than backgammon.

Because of this, I reckon a high IQ is more necessary in bridge than in backgammon.
