Motivation

I have a very simply answer, but one that I have always believed is the reason some people are highly motivated and others are not, and why we ourselves are sometimes highly motivated and sometimes not.
The answer is that unless we suffer from some kind of mental or emotional illness, we all strive for happiness in life. So we are motivated to work hard or study hard or push ourselves if we are happier when we do that, or conversely, when we are less happy when we don't.
I am 30 lbs. lighter now than I was 6 months ago because I got motivated to diet, and I got motivated to diet because I became unhappy with how I looked and felt and I am happier being thinner and eating less than I was when I was fat and eating everything I liked. If the BBQ ever means more to me than staying thin, and eating the food I like in large quantities makes me happier, then I will put the weight back on again. I hope I can continue to convince myself that I am happier this way, but only time will tell.
Studying backgammon, or working on my tennis (or whatever hobby or game you like) is the same thing. I am currently working hard on my backgammon game and studying hard (motivated) because the more I learn and the more I improve the happier it makes me. And when I make blunders and miss cubes, it really pisses me off! If I ever get to the point where I play at a lower PR rating than everyone else, I am sure I would be less motivated to keep working as hard too.
