I would like to see more / better backgammon competitions between its very best players. I find the prospect of bringing more people who are not masters into Masters events unappealing. ABT tournaments have one Open event. They don't need a second.

The ABT is a competition that creates healthy interest in attending tournaments. It is a relatively poor measurement of who is best, even if it worked this year. Tweaking the rules won't significantly improve the measurement. In fact, this suggestion would magnify the effect of high attendance on picking the ultimate winner while diminishing the effect of strong play. It would also penalize those who work for a living and have difficulty arriving in time to play a Masters event on Friday night. This often includes Neil, one of the few Giants with a demanding job.
