I agree (I think) that I would expect safer play at 2-away 4-away than at Gammon Go, except when near a cube. The opening happens to be near a cube, which means that tactical considerations may dominate. Perhaps it is often right to increase the volatility so that your opponent is forced to double far below the gammonless double point or else risk huge market losers.
It may be possible that you can choose a game plan which will tend to give your opponent inefficient doubles much later. Unfortunately we don't have a measure of this which is nearly as easy to quantify as the gammon price, although perhaps you can try to compute the cube vigorish. This only measures part of the effect because the checker plays depend on the score.
