Position 1 is somewhat front-loaded, so it must be right to make the 5pt. Plus, you don't have to break the 9pt to do it. White can hit with 54.

In Position 3, you do have to break the 9pt if you want to make the 5pt. White’s hitting numbers are limited, however, to 52 and 54, so the risks are minimal. Making the 5pt seems like the right idea.

In Position 2 White is farther back, so you might think Blue is better off. But White has more shots here than in the other positions. After Blue makes the 5pt, White can hit with 64, 62, 53, and 44. I’ll guess this is the one where Blue should refrain from making the 5pt.
