I still think there is something more. The "carate style" here. With his 2 new men in the zone and your split runners he intends "to say something" after his next roll. Since the 3 point is not much of (if at all) an improvement, and the pre-emptive hit will make him stutter... The Machine often shows me these pre-emptive hits. It is a common tactic.
