Chouette - Plausible ethymology

In Response To: Chouette - A few history notes (Rick Janowski)

From an extensive dictionary from the 1870s.

Basically : chouette/owl is clumsy in daylight and tends to be attacked by other birds if it ventures outside at that time of the day -> la chouette in a group of people = the butt monkey -> la chouette = the box in one vs. multiple players gaming.

The final shift where the chouette is the setup and the lone player is called something else may well have happened only after the name was adopted by english speakers.
