This is a typical case imo where change of plans is a must. The race lead (that affects timing) is currently too high and been such it has a negative effect on GWC%. I am sure everybody has experienced games where beyond a certain point the race leads start having a negative effect... If you want to keep the race lead high, maintain the 8 pt if not exchange it with the 5pt.

Perhaps you should try some variants with lower race leads and see what happens.
