Some Reflections for You to Consider Please, Michel

As mentioned in an earlier post I have never played with a clock and do not know either of the involved players, but a few thoughts...
An argument put forward by some posters is that the player hadn't punched his clock and therefore his moves after the first were illegal and both the position and time should be restored to his first breach. This is shifting the goalposts, from the ethics of not reminding a player that he should punch the clock to the redundant one of illegal plays, because regardless of what happened after the first illegal move the player's clock was still running. In other words, he was playing illegally in his own time, and for uncomfortable facts to still be worth anything that is why he timed out.
Somebody suggested the extreme scenario where a player keeps rolling and playing in a race without punching his clock or allowing his op to play. This is erroneous since all of his plays after the first are clearly illegal by every reasonable standard and has no bearing on this thread's issue, whether one should remind an op that his clock is running.
The player who won on time mentions his op had earlier reminded him that he was short on time; some may see this as good ethics at play while others might at least consider it may have been intended to pile on some psychological pressure. Either way, it demonstrates that the timed out player was aware and familiar with the critical clock element, and if he lapsed later on it is ridiculous that his op should be effectively penalised.
Other posters quite rightly point to the rules being constructed for an "enlightened" era, much like the liberal concept of 'ethical' warfare where it's better to lose rather than risk hurting a human shield. Imho this is pc twaddle, a sign of our times, and for the good of all it should be tossed into the garbage where it belongs.
Also in this regard, the interpretation and as important the ethical practice of bg rules seems to have evolved towards soft and fuzzy compared with other games and sports where there are no ifs or buts and a player in breach will be penalised, not awarded the benefit of being helped over the line.
