MM"I will take the ability to freely vigorously roll the dice over the tradition of "how it's always been done" every day of the week at this point."

Yes, Michael, this is a major reason why I favor the new USBGF rule. I want me and my opps to be able to roll vigorously as a strongly believe that this better insures that a random roll occurs. When I see both dice tumbling across the playing surface, I know that my opp hasn't pulled an occasional dump and slide move on me, etc. Too many players, even today, have poor shaking technique and all you get if you aren't paying attention and complain is a little wiggle of the cup and then a weak dump of the dice onto the board.

I'll take you back way back, about 40 years back when in my late teens near the end of the BG boom that started in the mid 70's I was simply crushing the clueless masses often winning 100 pts in the long chouette that would start about 6-7 pm and end about 1 to 2 am. Most had little clue how to play the checkers better than a PR of 10 and were much worse with the doubling cube viewed as simply a instrument of gambling. A friend told me, "Neil you're winning too much and too often, "they" know you're a lucky kid, but there's grumbling that you're cheating!" After a bit more discussion, we decided that the best course of action was for me to roll harder and let my opps see the dice bouncing around the board and to point that out to them occasionally.

Way back then, many boards were smaller cheap pieces of crap and with big square dice and had thin cups that did a poor job of shaking the dice even when the roller was trying to produce random dice.

Dean Muench (RIP) wrote about what he called mini-mechanics. Basically players shaking poorly and dumping dice that were too large for their cups out softly in hopes of obtaining less than random rolls that were in their favor. The garbage equipment of yesteryear provided an ideal environment for that.

So I learned to roll vigorously.
