In Response To: ATS containment cube (Timothy Chow)

As Casper already astutely mentioned, if you've seen similar positions come up time and time again you will have noticed some things.

  • Generally speaking, humans wait too long or way too long to double these positions
  • What is perhaps even more surprising is that the bots on their lower plies also have the same tendencies. They don't understand how strong the containment player's position is and often wait too long to double and take passes. A rollout is necessary.

From knowing these two things there is one thing that is sure about this position, must double. Also, a position like this we need to make our opponent's problem, not our own. Is it a take, is it a pass? Who really actually knows? Not our opponent, put him to the test. As for me, even though the opp's TP is lower AtS and the scant gammons for both sides may even weigh in my opp's favor because of our relative gammon values, I'd probably let it go.

The one thing that argues for a take of course is that we are unlikely to make any errors playing this position out whereas our opponent may have some actual containment decisions and not play it perfectly. Still, in a live tournament match, I don't like pushing the cube to 4 when 'maybe' it's a take given the skill difference that normally exists so as Black I'd drop.
