In Response To: Opinion poll here. Die on checker. (David Rockwell)

In response to David Rockwell's post, one reason the Chicago chouette does not play with the die on the checker rule is that we always use the Scrambler when we play, so we don't have to worry about die on the checker or for that matter, rarely see cocked dice. Also, we don't use cups with the Scrambler...we all know they are totally unnecessary and even cause a problem, making it harder to put the dice into the scrambler. (People who came up with that rule either haven't tried the modern baffle boxes very much or remember how it was possible to set the dice in the old, inferior baffle boxes. Also, even if you could set the dice, it is an obvious maneuver that requires placing the dice gently into the scrambler, and that is very easy to see and detect and call the person out on such an action.)

Also, with cups you have that nasty shaking noise that most of us hate to hear our opponents make while we are counting pips or thinking about what to play on our turn.

As for the dice on the checker rule, it doesn't bother me to play that way and I don't think it hurts my game, but as David and many others point out, is it worth it? Do we want to play one way in the US that is not accepted anywhere else in the world? Do we want to have some rules at some events and not at others at the whim of the tournament directors and confuse people and have one more thing to have to clarify? Is it worth it? Do we want to alienate and upset people that is does bother, like David Rockwell and others?

How about using it for speed gammon when both players agree to it, and mark it on their scoresheet (just like when they agree to legal moves in a non-legal moves tournament)? Obviously the game is not worth the candle here.

I vote No for those reasons. Now, if we had an international set of rules that applied world-wide that said dice on the checkers counts everywhere in the world.....I would absolutely vote yes.
