Don't tell me that Monte Carlo still uses those awful small boards with the Blue and White checkers?!! I think they're about 25 years old now. I have not been in 7 years, and hated playing on them then as much as I did back in the 90's. Those boards are a reason that I don't feel keen to make the journey to MC very often. OK I'll admit that I don't feel keen to travel very far very often anyhow, since I almost always seem to end up somewhat sick if not flattened by some ailment when I do.

If any tourney could benefit from the flat dice on checkers rule it is a tourney with small shitty boards that have thin checkers that are result in almost any vigorously rolled dice ending up on top of the checkers!

My opps deserve to see me try to generate random rolls and to be sure that they can see both dice tumbling on the board (to be certain that I didn't have one set hidden in a finger or to be sure that I am not trying some damp and slide move or didn't sneak a finger into my cup to set a die etc etc).

So many cheat moves come from a die not moving much when hitting the board so that it stays with the face up that the cheat intended. But unless using loaded dice, it really is difficult to cheat when both dice can be seen by the opp moving the length of even a small board and bouncing into checkers.

But having only a small space to roll into without having the dice end up on checkers, encourages poor rolling techniques and these techniques are similar to the ones used by cheats. Monte Carlo draws players from many countries and diverse cultures world wide. Not everyone is close to known by everyone else and a couple bad apples can cheat to improve their chances of rolling what they need.

A few players have told me to adjust my rolling to roll more sideways across the board to minimize chances to cock on checkers. But on a small board this isn't much space and the chance for the dice to hop over the bar to the other side becomes greater.

But, more importantly a short sideways rolling move is so similar to the pinkie finger holdout move. So someone shakes the dice and then rolls sideways close to the bar and the die in the cup rolls a few cm. perhaps hitting the bar and bouncing back while the die hidden are the pinkie finger is released and while perhaps it slides a cm. or so or twists a bit, it stays face up. Are your eyes good enough to detect this? Are your eyes good enough to tell when your opp rolls the same way but both dice come out of the cup but only one of those dice moves a few cm?

Far better to have a rule that encourages vigorous rolling of the dice along the playing surface and doesn't punish those who often cock dice on checkers.

Of this doesn't mean that dice aren't cocked by not being flat whether on checkers or not. But still, and especially on lousy small boards, dice cock flat on checkers often.

My apologies to the organizers and staff at MC, many of whom are very good friends of mine. But if those awful boards from 25 years ago are still in use, please do something to get rid of them and to make sure that at least every champ level match is played on better boards.
