Thanks to all for the helpful advice and explanations.

This explains my misunderstanding of the phrase 'the doubling window'.

Perhaps it would be better for this concept to be known as something like 'the approximate doubling window', or 'the non-board position considering, non-gammon considering, cubeful, score-based doubling window' rather than 'the doubling window' (which to me implies the location of the most pertinent boundaries, derived from full consideration of all relevant factors).
