NY High Roller Event

While I get what you're saying it isn't true for most people. It may not even be true for you. First, you're likely speaking of a combination of things. One, if there is a significant amount of money to be won. Two, it works on the assumption that there will be people there you know. Imagine if there was a $5 or $10 weekly/monthly local club event. Are you going to rush to go to it simply because the players are bad given you don't know a soul there? Most people wouldn't.
Most players view bg as a social event with backgammon as the focus. Yes, they come for the bg but if you were to vacuum all the people they knew from the event it would have a massive impact on the turnout. Take your Florida events for example, why doesn't anyone go to these?? Is the weather too nice compared to something like New York in January? Is the city too shitty compared to something like the raving metropolis of Cleveland, Ohio? I don't know but I know nobody goes which in turn causes nobody else to go. The Giants presumably are the players that tend to attend the most tournaments. Since they attend so many tournaments they know more and more people and generally speaking, this helps the social aspect when players attend. Having the bg prowess that they do makes them only more desirable for such events. I know people aren't talking to me because of my charming demeanor and social butterfly like skills.
