I only have one major tournament under my belt, but I suspect you can't really appreciate the stress and logistics surrounding collecting all that money, securing it, and then sorting and paying it out until you've found yourself staring at a safe full of cash and have been making constant money pouch runs through a hotel.

It's more than just renting space and running brackets.

16 players make $45,000 that the organizers have to secure and manage.

I think that's worth a rake. Maybe they would forgo the rake if you all just agreed to pay the winners directly with your entry fee at the end of the tournament.
