It is not true or false core. Today memory is soooooooo slooooooowww compared to the CPU that you gain throughput by having another thread in the core that could utilize the HW when the first thread is blocked waiting for a memory access.
And BTW multiplying single core performance with the number of cores is usually not possible unless the problem is ridiculous simple to parallelize. You might read about Amdahl's law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdahl%27s_law) if interested. Rolling out several positions is easy to parallelize, but to have a traditional x-ply evaluation is not.
