In Response To: Settings for playing Snake (backgame) (mtuhtan)

I few years ago I set up a position in Snowie with all 15 checkers in a back game. I played it several times against Snowie from both sides to see if I could win and to see how it played. From both sides, I was not winning as much as the percentages said I should nor as much as Snowie was when it played the other side. I began taking tips from Snowie and playing more the way it said I should play, and I began winning more and was eventually close to the predicted percentages. (I wrote this up in an article on GV.)

While it is true that if you examine each play that Snowie made and rolled it out, many of the plays changed upon rollout, and it's also true that if would be hard to prove that the rollouts were accurate, but I can say, definitively, that the more I played like the bot the more I ended up winning.

I suspect you can do the same thing with Snake and with all other variants. If making the bot's plays gives you better results, that's a pretty strong argument for trusting the bots to have a reasonable understanding of the game (even if it does seem to botch some individual plays).
