It will be like "backgammon-to-lose" where you each make three horrible moves then turn the board around and try to win from there. When you do that, you have to rely much more on skill and reasoning instead of memory and rules of thumb.
Play nackgammon. Very few people know what the hell they're doing even after the very first roll. Some pretty bizarre situations emerge quite quickly, so you'd get to exercise those 'creative' juices. (In the end though, I suspect the application of "skill and reasoning" here would simply involve a somewhat more sophisticated combination of "memory and rules of thumb" anyway.)
On this topic, given that nackgammon is a well-respected variant, are there any decent books out there on the subject? I don't know of them. This seems like a gap in the market as a good number of online money games are played with the nackgammon starting configuration.
