In Response To: Best online data source for studying opening replies? (Matt Ryder)

Hi Matt,

The rollouts for 2nd roll positions on my site were performed in the Dark Ages of opening roll understanding (around 2003 or 2004). Since then, Stick, Nack, Paul and others have popularized the study of openings and replies and we now have much higher quality data.

At the time, after describing some of the limitations of my rollouts (here), I wrote: "Nevertheless, I believe the rollout results will hold up quite well." It would be interesting to see how often these weaker rollouts are wrong and by how much.

When the weak rollouts give the wrong answer, it would be fun to try to pin down the reason why. E.g., it is because (1) the rollouts are cubeless, or (2) the rollouts are 0-ply, or (3) the rollouts are truncated? Or is it a combination of the above?

Tom
