Containment checker play: right move filter?

In Response To: Containment checker play (Timothy Chow)

Hello Timothy,

I can't say much about containment games and rules of thumb in general, because containment is one of my many weaknesses in this fine game.

But with problems like the one that you posted AND many other similar positions I made an interesting observation: with the standard settings of gnuBG, 2ply analysis / eval and normal move filter, GnuBG sometimes misses the overall best play because it does not make it through the movefilter in the first place (because there are just too many possible, reasonable moves. Especially when you analyze doubles.)

Therefore, I strongly recommend an evaluation in any given position with 4ply AND a HUGE move filter.

After that, you want to rollout the best n moves (with n=4 or n=5)

Just my 2 ct.
