Uh, oh. Am I supposed to peak at the database?
There are a number of 2nd-roll situations involving a loose hit on your side of the board, where it's not immediately obvious whether you should play the other die by splitting from the back or bringing a checker down from the midpoint. If you're just trying to memorize these plays and if you don't care about picking the "wrong" one when there's very little difference in equity, then the following set of rules will work pretty well:
1. If you hit loose with a 1, then play the other die from the midpoint.
2. Otherwise, if your opponent's roll had a 1 or a 6, then split your back checkers.
3. Otherwise, bring one down from the midpoint.
The main exception to the above is that if your opponent plays 24/20 13/10 and you roll 6-1, then 24/18 6/5* is better than 13/7 6/5*. Most of us have to learn this play separately anyway since it involves not making the bar point with a 6-1.
Another exception is that after 24/20 24/21, it's too vulnerable to play 8/5* 13/9, but 24/20 24/21 is rarely seen in money games.
