In Response To: Ruling in Chicago (Chuck Bower)

I can't stand some of the responses, because it proves that once again, by trying to interpret the rules that seem pretty clearly written, I screw myself over. In the past, I have noticed an illegal play after I picked up the dice, but the thought never ever crossed my mind to try to repair it... the dice were picked up after all, you CAN'T correct a move after that. But, if I had gone with the whole loosey goosey thing, maybe I could have.

You condone a move by picking up the dice, and illegal moves cannot be corrected after the dice are picked up. Part of the benefit of playing with clocks is that we remove all debates about what the roll was.

I'm just tired of a lack of respect for procedural things in backgammon, such as:

  • In unclocked backgammon, you're not allowed to roll until the other guy picks up the dice. This isn't really all that hard to follow, but people seem hell bent on saving that 0.2 seconds, and somehow I look like the asshole if I try to impose the premature roll rule (where I get to decide whether or not the roll stands).
  • In clocked backgammon, you're not allowed to pick up the dice until your opponent has hit the clocked. This isn't really all that hard to follow, but people seem hell bent on saving that 0.2 seconds. Also, there's no *real* penalty for violation of the rule. In San Francisco, the rule was one warning followed by a 30 second clock runoff. At last, a real penalty.
  • You're not allowed to handle the checkers with two hands.
  • You're not allowed to handle checkers on your opponent's turn.

I'm just so sick of being the passive guy that sits back and lets people do all these things they're not supposed to do because I don't want to be the jerk that is enforcing all these ticky tack rules. I just don't know about this anymore. I think it's time to start calling people on it and standing up for my rights to not have people trample over the damn rule book. Fine, folks, I guess I'll just have to be a jerk.

So, I guess I've decided. If you play me, keep your bloody mitts off the checkers and dice when it's my turn. Don't roll early, and don't pick up the dice early, and keep one hand stuffed down your trousers. I'll give one nice, friendly warning, and then a more stern warning, and then I'm calling the tournament director. Call me Mr. Ticky Tack if you want, I've had it.
