"Begun doing"? I'm not impressed. It's a poorly written rule, period. Either the picking up or the rolling should have been omitted, or the whole thing spelled out much more carefully.

Here's a question: am I allowed to pick up the dice, and then double? If so, should the rule specify that the procedure for doubling involves either turning the cube or picking up the dice and then turning the cube?

Most illegal plays do not involve a dispute about the dice roll.
