As an empirical matter, many illegal move situations do not involve a dispute over what the dice roll was. I see no purpose in the needless formalism that would prevent an illegal play from being corrected in these situations merely because a player picked up the dice.

Fine, I'm alright with that, but then the rules have to be rewritten, because I don't agree with the interpretation that the current rules allow you to correct an illegal move after the dice have been lifted. It's hugely upsetting to me that this is even entertained, because as I've mentioned, this means I've screwed MYSELF over in the past.
