Well, the rules should be rewritten either way, since they are clearly susceptible to two reasonable interpretations.

I am confident there are people who have interpreted the rule the opposite way from you, and "screwed themselves" by allowing an illegal move to be corrected even after the dice were picked up. They might be similarly upset that your interpretation is even entertained.

At the end of the day, ambiguous language is ambiguous regardless of whether everyone sees the ambiguity. All we can do is try to write the clearest set of rules we can.
