Of course you (or any other honest/trusted person) is free to enter an event at OR ABOVE your skill level. So if you want to compete against the best (and I understand that sentiment) then that's what you should do. You can have your cake and the lower tiered players can eat theirs, too.

Although you've hit some of the qualities of backgammon play, there are others. If learning is one of a person's goals, there are ample opportunities to watch matches. One of the pluses of kibitzing doubles is that in some cases there is considerable discussion of play/cube choices. You want at least one willing, instructive top level player; two would be better but that's a lot harder to find.
