It happens on the crap table all the time, and it is virtually always obvious

I can imagine how such a rule could work in craps. You could have a principle that said: If a die is leaning against the wall, assume that outer face is the one that's more upward. (The theory being that if the inner face were more more upward the die would fall over.)

But in backgammon there are lots of situations where that doesn't work -- you could have a die jammed between a checker and the wall or dangling between two checkers.

If both players cannot agree whether it is clear or not, then of course you would need a ruling.

Better order some Koca Angle Measures!
