Take my replies to B as a "I dunno".
When contemplating if I should participate in a backgammon tournament, I generally consider the following factors:
- low entry fee (I play for fun. I am not in backgammon for the money. Judging by the success of the London tournament, apparently some players feel the same)
- very low rake (a high rake is a turn off for me)
- low travel time and cost (sometimes I deviate from this and go to tournaments in Cph despite this being time consuming and expensive (when compared to the general entry and prizes)).
- general attendance in the the tournament. If few participants have signed up, then I often don't bother to go.
- other entertainment/hobby/family activities which are available in the same weekend. Sometimes backgammon is not the most attractive option for that weekend.
- my motivation level. When I am motivated to play, I play well and will be more likely to participate. When I am not motivated, I will probably not participate.
The format or venue are not factors which are likely to influence my participation. Whether or not the tournament is clocked is also irrelevant for me.
