Just to add to what's already been said, in a position where you are handily behind in the race, and where splitting comes at considerable risk, the value of making a pure play that leaves some shots goes up (or rather, the risk isn't as great as it normally would be). After 11/5, if you are hit on the 11pt, you will often enter on a point higher than your anchor. This gives you the benefits of splitting without having to give up your anchor to do so.

It can also be less committal. Let's say you play 11/5, get hit, and enter on the 22pt. If you subsequently roll a 2, you have the option of advancing your anchor or not, depending on how the game has developed. It's not that you want a third checker back, but it does come with some benefits when you are already a pretty clear underdog.
