64S-21H-51 — Nactation Key Family Nactation Traditional Notation Note Slot $ bar/20, 6/5 $ (Slot) is a style family. The non-slotting portion of a roll, if any, usually must be played down (i.e., to or within the outer board). An exception is made for forced moves, or when entering from the bar. Both B bar/20, 9/8 B (Both) is an areal family. On a roll of a non-doublet, one checker moves on the far side of the board, while the other is played entirely within the outer board. Cross C bar/24, 9/3 C (Cross) is an areal family. Half the roll is played on the far side of the board, with the other half jumping over the bar, from the outer board into the inner board. Down D bar/20, 9/8 D (Down) is an areal family. All parts of a roll are played to or within the outer board. As with most families, an exception is made when part of a roll is forced, or is used entering from the bar. Down d bar/24, 13/8 By the 6pt Convention, a spare destination on the far side of the board is preferred when it is closest to the 6pt. Entering on the 24pt, therefore, ranks below entering on the 20pt. Each E bar/24, 6/5 E (Each) is an areal family. Half the roll is moved on the far side of the board, while the other half is played entirely within the inner board. Split S bar/24, 13/8 S (Split) is an areal family. On a roll of a non-doublet, the larger die is played to a destinatinon on the far side of the board, while the other is is played down, i.e., to a destination to or within the outer board.
By the Convenience Clause, when the S (Split) family is empty, as it is in this case, S can be used instead of Z.
Up U bar/20, 24/23 U (Up) is an areal family. All parts of a roll are played to destinations between the 24pt and 18pt. Wild W bar/20, 6/5 W (Wild) is a style family. It describes a move that both splits and slots (a.k.a. “splot”). Reverse split Z bar/24, 13/8 Z (Reverse split) is an areal family. On a roll of a non-doublet, the smaller die is played to a destinatinon on the far side of the board, while the other is is played down, i.e., to a destination to or within the outer board.
By the Convenience Clause, when the Z family is empty, S (Split) is preferred in most contexts.
This third-roll position is itself a close decision. What would you play? Why? Timothy’s selection of the D (Down) family to describe his play of d (down) = bar/24 13/8 is perfectly correct. What he failed to notice, however, is that the capital letter goes to D (Down) = bar/20 9/8.
