If you find any better ways to deal with this problem, please let me know.

You can write your own CSS stylesheet and tell your browser to apply that to a specific domain. In principle, this should work with google groups. But since I have a real newsreader to access usenet I'm too lazy to do it myself. I've done it with other websites.
