I think if the choice is between putting two on the bar with a one point board, and two on the bar vs a 2 point board, and you outboard opp and have checkers in the zone so that a semi-blitz is plausible, it would be a special case if making the 2nd point would not be best. The 3 point is OK, and the 3 spares on the 6 are perfect to make the 4 and 5, giving the best possible 4-point home-board structure, this also shows that the 3-point is not particularly deep.
