I too would have made the running play - my bad.

However, in examining the position, I see that a lot of the same numbers that would hit one are also used to hit a 2nd checker in the halfway play. Meaning that the joker value is increased dramatically (11,22,33,32,12,31 etc etc.), however there are fewer of them, thus reducing the overall cost of the play.

I found that very easy to overlook just as a cursory glance at the position. A lesson all of us could learn - to blindly play by the rules is to play by rote, not by understanding. Certainly, I could do with paying more attention to these from time to time.
