Ping pong's double-point ball

Whenever I teach someone to play they are always surprised and disappointed that the doubling cube is never rolled. So building on what you said, when playing a beginner you could use these rules:
1) No cube during play. Obviously beginners lack the feel for the game to use a cube anyway especially when they're still figuring out how to move their pieces.
2) If the experienced player wins, the cube stays unturned (so gammons count as two, and backgammons as three points).
3) If the beginner wins, they get to roll the cube and that's the value of cube. You could only allow up to 8 or whatever to keep it from being too outrageous.
This adds a crazy element to the game and provides a handicap which hopefully keeps the beginner player from getting too depressed when they lose game after game as all it takes is one win and a good roll to even things up again.
