Some day I would truly like to see a real, true, definitive test of skill.

I agree it would be interesting to see the result of such a test, but would it (if it were possible to create such a test) really be a good thing?

The point of running tournaments is to see who the best player is. The fact that tournaments don't give a definitive answer means that you have to keep having more tournaments to get a clearer answer. You wouldn't need to have tournaments if there was some other easy way to discover who is best.

You could even make a case that the availability of strong bots has hurt tournament attendence. Players that might otherwise enter a tournament can now get a reality check and discover they are not nearly as good as they think they are.
