Maybe I should say, "the perceived point of running a tournament ..."

If there was a quiz that was easy for people to take, and (1) that quiz reliably ranked all players from best to worst, and (2) everybody took this quiz, and (3) the results were widely known, (a lot of big if's, I know) then I think it would be devastating for tournaments.

Yes, people like to play backgammon. But it's more fun to play when you don't know for sure who the better player is.

(I should say that I think #1 is impossible and there is no reason that #2 or #3 have to happen. So we're talking about a situation that will never happen -- which is a good thing.)
