Rod: But this brings me to the question: what, if it exists, is the solution here? Should players be cautioned in tournament brochures, reminded verbally at the start of tournaments, throughout tournaments, be penalized somehow for breaches of etiquette (how)?

Bad etiquette is not knowing which spoon to use. This is egregious. You should report them to the tournament director, who should reprimand them on no uncertain terms.

All of you people who gasp or say "wow" or otherwise react when you're watching backgammon matches: Stop it. And if you can't stop, then you can't watch.
