You're right.

The 2.85 (not 2.9) might actually be a 3.2. Or a 2.7. Or higher or lower.

But that's yet one more point of uncertainty.

For someone to say "X plays a Y.Z PR"... Well, it's not the best way to look at it because no one can know. The only time anyone can know is if they record every single match, have an average and then the SD (what would make it more informative).

The most meaningful number(s) would probably be something like the range that was the average- 1/2 or 1 SD to the average + 1/2 or 1 SD.
